Golf in Oakland? Ya betcha! This 18-hole golf course was established in 1903 and the country club some time after. Between 1937 and 1943 Oakland hosted The Oakland Open. The first one was played on this course. The winner was a chap named Sam Snead in his first professional win! It is strictly a private club now and costs megabucks to join plus a hefty monthly fee for services. The surrounding neighborhood in Upper Rockridge is quite expensive with large, beautiful homes. The immediate area around the course was spared damage in the 1991 firestorm but the area above the course lost many, many homes and some lives to the fire. Besides the large, open expanse of green this course provides the area, I was impressed by how humid the air felt on the course. Since it doesn't rain here in the summer, they must really pour the water to it to keep it so green. For other "C" photos from around the world, visit

I love all the green !
ReplyDeleteWow. I can remember driving past this many times as a kid. Had fogotten it was there. Beautiful shot of the course.
ReplyDeleteDo you golf? New Zealand is reputed to be the cheapest place to play golf. We have good golfers too.
ReplyDeletePretty green photo! Now that you have mentioned the firestorm, and the dryness in that area, I wonder how they keep it humidifide. Maybe they have a sprinkler system?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.

I was very impressed by the deep green of this grass because it does not rain hardly ever
ReplyDeletethe greens are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThough I don't golf, I do admire the green & the sloping views. Love the different shades of green here.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, thanks for the visit. :)
My photo which is the C which illustrates my poem was actually taken in Oakland when I was visiting this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it as much as I am enjoying your photos!
C is for... "Love" left behind?
Yes does seem an unlikely place for an expanse of lush green fairways but there it is..which reminds me that it was along the Sequoyah Golf Course (nearby?)where my grandparents lived.
ReplyDeleteI have so many memories of this place - not for golf, but the place. Thanks for sharing and also for paying me a visit and commenting on my "c" post!
ReplyDeleteLovely green photo but one has to wonder at the amount of water they used in what is a dry area - although not particularly so this year, I gather.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful landscape.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful course. Arizona keeps its courses green, too, and the humidity there has changed considerably. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteLovely greens here..
