Monday Mural: Warriors mural

A new mural which faces the 880 freeway alludes to the electric performance of Steph Curry and his Warrior teammates.  Fittingly, Illuminaries has painted this one on a wall of an indooor basketball court.  Not surprisingly, Under Armor, a major client in Steph's endorsement empire, helped pay for the mural.  As of this week the Warriors have again won the Western division and the first seed position in the Conference playoffs.  Third year in a row.  Now starts the long march to the championship finals.  All of us in Dub Nation are rooting for the another NBA championship.  Waarrriors!!

Monday Mural: eye full of dragons

Above the black and gold dragons, which are somewhat obscured by thoughtless tagging, is another dragon.  The style is way different and this dragon looks lean, angry, and hungry.  Pretty scary dude.  I did not see a signature but I don't think it's from the Dragon School.  This dragon gathering is found on the edge of Chinatown on a street that faces a freeway on-ramp.  Maybe the constant rumble of traffic has gotten on his nerves.

Monday Mural: whose a good boy?

The Wag Hotel boards your canine friend when you're out of town.  They've wrapped their building in great photographic portraits that are charming to view.  A great way to advertise, especially when you face a freeway as this building does.

training tower

I usually see this training tower from the freeway that you see in the background of the photo.   This angle is new to me and happily adds a lot of color from the fire trucks.

Monday Mural: mystical communion

This new mural faces onto a freeway on ramp in downtown Oakland.  Ryan Montoya is a Mescalero Apache from southern New Mexico while Ernest Doty is a local artist who grew up in Albuquerque.  I look at the mural and think of curanderas, the tales of Don Juan, magic mushrooms, Salvador Dali, and science fiction.  And you?

Monday Mural: mosaic advertising

Jingletown is full of artist studios along with newly constructed condos.  The mosaic studio has done a lot of projects to spruce up what was once a neglected area of town.  I liked it when I saw this business sign using the mosaic technique.  An interesting, if not unexpected, junction between art and an industrial business.

Monday Mural: in the spirit of a connected community

This is a new mural on the back of a building that faces the Nimitz freeway near the 23rd Avenue on ramp.   I noticed it only a few weeks ago and it took me a while to figure out how to access it.  It's not that easy to do when you're driving 65 mph!  It is painted by J. Medlin who says it was inspired by the East Oakland Boxing Association and Carrie's Touch which supports African-American women with breast cancer.

more turtles

Dan Fontes is adding to his Emergent Sea mural featured yesterday.  Although you can readily see the mural from the freeway, finding the street it's on is another story.  I had to circle the area a few times before I found the circuitous route there.  Whew.  Mission accomplished.

Monday Mural: Emergent Sea

This sea turtle was create by mural artist Dan Fontes, who has previously been featured here and here.  You can see this Jingletown mural from the 880 freeway.  Thanks to Oakland North I learned that Dan is adding two more turtles to this work.  His new project has been a hit with the local kids.  Will post an "in progress" shot tomorrow.

Sunday Bridge Series: link to the estuary

Lake Merritt is a tidal basin fed by the tides in the estuary.  This water way is the link between the lake and the estuary.  It runs through the community college campus, under the Nimitz freeway, and on to the estuary.  Not exactly a picturesque connection, but a vital one.  Submitted to «Louis'» meme where you will find more bridge photos.

freeway fusion

Essentially we are near the spot where three freeways merge.  This section replaced the double deck freeway that collapsed during the huge 1989 earthquake.  After the earthquake, support pier retrofitting went on around the bay.  A new round is going on now in many parts of Oakland.  These really are massive structures.  I used to think of them as temporary shade; since the earthquake I think of them as lethal and hope the new engineering protects us from anymore collapses.

a walk along the shore

Took a stroll along the MLK Shoreline Park late Sunday afternoon.  Despite its proximity to the airport and the 880 freeway, the park was a peaceful retreat.  I shared the park with families enjoying the day, bicyclers, cawing terns, and a huge colony of ground squirrels.  This small area of marshland was restored in 1998 and has been quietly restoring the health of the estuary ever since.

One of the Four Guardians

This mural (only part of which you see) was painted last year on the back of a large warehouse which faces the 880 freeway.  I like the mix of styles between wild animation and traditional Chinese scroll paintings.  The folks who designed and executed it gave it a lot of thought.  Taggers have left it alone but the same cannot be said for the train cars that stand near the mural.

Nature undeterred

When walking to my car near Chinatown, a flash of red caught my eye.  This ivy clings to the wall of a freeway on-ramp, persisting though never tended to.  How does it survive all that carbon monoxide?
