Monday Mural: the corner tropics

Found this tropical mural by Malcom Stuart in Jingletown.  It curves around the corner of the building and features psychedelic 3-D geckos.  Hey, that reminds me we're coming up on the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love.  Feelin' groovy.

Monday Mural: Valentine's Day

A local carpet store creates these mini murals for various holidays or special events.  I thought this one was pretty funny.

Monday Mural: mosaic advertising

Jingletown is full of artist studios along with newly constructed condos.  The mosaic studio has done a lot of projects to spruce up what was once a neglected area of town.  I liked it when I saw this business sign using the mosaic technique.  An interesting, if not unexpected, junction between art and an industrial business.

Monday Mural: White Elephant Sale mural

Last week you saw this mural in progress.  Here is the finished product.  To the Women's Board, the gigantic white elephant is the pièce de resistance of the mural.  The bicycle gives you a sense the scale of this mural.  Below is the bird you saw sketched in last week's post.
Below are two more sections from the far end of the mural.

The artists are great guys who were more than willing to talk with folks who stopped by.

I'll be away for three weeks but the meme will still go up every Sunday (unless I screw up).  Wifi will be scarce so I'm unlikely to be able to leave comments.  Ciao.

Monday Mural: mural in progress

The White Elephant Sale, an annual event that supports the Oakland Museum, has commissioned a mural on the side of its warehouse.  Doty, Griffin One, and Vogue, well-known street artists, are seen here creating the mural.  Next week shots of the finished product.

Fruitvale Railroad Bridge

The Fruitvale Railroad Bridge spans the Estuary from Oakland to the island town of Alameda (on the right).  To my eye it looks like a 1930s construction but it was actually built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1951.  It's a vertical lift bridge with railroad tracks on it that is lowered into position when trains need to cross the estuary.  The Miller-Sweeney Bridge it the drawbridge next to it that carries car traffic.  It was designed to raise to full height it only 66 seconds.  The truth is that locals  call them both the Fruitvale Bridge.  Bridge fans will be happy to know there is a website for the bridges!  For a picture of the bridge drawn up, go here.

when you're out of planter boxes...

What can I say?  Those wacky guys at Automania Studios are starting their spring gardening.  Found in the artistic enclave of Jingletown.

A is for Automania

Those wacky guys at Automania have cut up another car and placed it facing one of their walls.  Their stuff always makes me laugh.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

Automania again

Automania has some pretty funny stuff around their building.  Their motto is Rust in Peace.  Presumably with laughter on their lips.  Located in Jingletown and always worth a visit.

Monday mural: Straus Carpets

Straus Carpet has had their warehouses faced with eye catching murals.  So far their name is on a placard rather than on the building.  This attractive and colorful scene anchors a decidedly industrial corner here on the edge of Jingletown.  Pretty elegant, if you ask me.

Monday mural: mosaic man

This warehouse in Jingletown is decorated with mosaic murals that have evolved over the past few years.  They use several sizes and shapes of tile including mirror tiles that add both sparkle and definition.  I couldn't find a signature but hope someone will fill me in.

Monday Mural: Oakland Riviera

Jingletown attracts artists and kindred souls.  A collaborative effort among them created multiple murals along this wall.  Drolly named the "Oakland Riviera" (referencing the estuary that runs the length of the neighborhood), this section of mural captures the local view.  These murals line a dog run dubbed rue de merde.  On the left you can see a glimpse of the section dedicated to local canine friends.  It's always interesting to visit this wall, as the murals continue to change and be refined.

Monday Mural: heart and mind

This is a section of a larger mural found on E. 7th St. Near Fruitvale Avenue.  It was recently done by students at Arise High School under the guidance of the Community Rejuvenation Project.  CRP is the organization behind many of Oakland's murals.
Many of Oakland's well known muralists help students design and execute these murals.

Monday Mural: Virgin de Guadalupe

Today is the feast day of La Virgin de Guadalupe, an icon so important to Mexican culture.  This mural was done with glass mosaic tesserae, possibly under the guidance of the nearby Institute of Mosaic Art, on a mural wall in Jingletown.  Check out links to other murals posted today here, here, and here.

ABC Wednesday: M is for mosaic

Located in Jingletown, the Institute of Mosaic Art teaches mosaic design and offers mosaic services.  Several businesses in Jingletown have capitalized on the Institute's presence to use mosaics for their business signs.  For other takes on "M" visit Mrs. Nesbitt's meme ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: Oakland Riviera

The artists in Jingletown have designed a wall of murals in an area they've dubbed the Oakland Riviera.  Tongue in cheek of course.  One of the murals contains portraits of their beloved critters who are walked on what has been renamed the "rue de merde."  Looks like they clean up after their dogs too.  This is around the corner from the lizard/iguana posted earlier.

ABC Wednesday: V is for voilà!

Voila! is a local juice company that has made good.  Their warehouse is located in Jingletown.  Can't miss their trucks.  For more "V" photos, visit the popular meme ABC Wednesday.

more turtles

Dan Fontes is adding to his Emergent Sea mural featured yesterday.  Although you can readily see the mural from the freeway, finding the street it's on is another story.  I had to circle the area a few times before I found the circuitous route there.  Whew.  Mission accomplished.

Monday Mural: Emergent Sea

This sea turtle was create by mural artist Dan Fontes, who has previously been featured here and here.  You can see this Jingletown mural from the 880 freeway.  Thanks to Oakland North I learned that Dan is adding two more turtles to this work.  His new project has been a hit with the local kids.  Will post an "in progress" shot tomorrow.
