Monday Mural: crouching tiger

This large tiger and cub mural is found in the Uptown neighborhood on a Korean BBQ joint.  It was done in 2015 by No One.  Unfortunately, it's beginning to peel in some spots.  But it's still pretty dramatic.

Monday Mural: Robbie Burns is right

Yesterday was gray and dull but this mural fairly glowed.  I didn't see a signature, but then again this was a drive by and shoot operation.  The mural graces the Commonwealth Pub.  One has to appreciate the sentiments of the Robert Burns quote.

Monday Mural: cosmic visionary

Here's another mural by Doty that represents a new theme and style for him.  This is the third one I've found.  I showed you this one a while ago.  I'm pretty sure the bird on the other face of the wall is also by Doty, but an earlier style.  It's interesting how his styles can be so different from one another.

Monday Mural: good vs. evil

I totally get the idea of good vs. evil.  I'm just not sure what a flying VW bus has to do with it.  Spotted in Uptown.  The artist is No One.

Monday Mural: collaborative effort

This is a small space that has a continuously changing mural.  I see five signatures and three different crews represented in this.  I think it should be called Owl's Nightmare given the wild colors and bizarre images that seem to be sitting on owl's head.  How do you suppose so many artists develop the theme and then divide up the space?

Monday Mural: and how are the children?

Information on this mural says that this question is a Masai greeting.  It was done by Amend of the TDK crew and can be found on Telegraph Avenue in the Uptown area.  It's across the street from the Stork Club mural I posted last week.  Did you notice that some of the blocks show TDK and spell out Amend's name?  Too bad about the ugly billboard that intrudes into the scene.  The commentary partially obscured by the plants reads, "A community can only thrive when its youth do.  May we never forget that the children are the heart of our community and may we never give up on them!"

Monday Mural: Stork Club

The Stork Club is a popular music venue in Uptown.  Sometime recently, when I wasn't looking, a new mural went up on its facade.  If you look at the components, the whole mural is pretty funny. Stealth humor.   Once again, I don't know who did it.  My bad.

Monday Mural: future embrace past

Found on Telegraph Avenue.  It replaces this mural I showed you quite a while back.  I saw it out of the corner of my eye and had to drive around the block to shoot it.  Didn't see a name, don't know what it means, but it's an arresting image.

body art

No matter where you look, young adults are completely covered in tattoos.  Not my thing, but they are fascinating.  This is a grab shot taken while walking in the Uptown area.

Monday Mural: fuming guerilla collaboration

This large mural decorates a building on San Pablo Avenue right around the corner from the paste-up I showed you last week.  It's a collaboration of several street artists including Nite Owl and the CBS crew.  I think I see a small bird by Doty under the second L.  Fuming Guerilla is an organization that matches up street artists with folks who want a mural.  Kind of a middle man, if you will.  I think of this mural as a sampler of different styles rather than a coherent composition.

Monday Mural: looking askance

Recently there seems to be a number of food and entertainment joints that have closed down in this one block stretch of Uptown.  When this happens, street artists move in and use the spaces to ply their trade.  Here is a piece by GATS on what seems was a sign on a now defunct business.  You can't miss his style.  This is a half face from the cheeks up with abstracted names of street artists running down the nose.  To my eye it has the look of Maori tattoos.  Don't know who drew the woman, but she appears a smidge uncertain about the guy she's glancing at.

Monday Mural: nite owl

Mr. Nite Owl looks like quite the dandy.  Found in Uptown, this Cannon Dill mural takes the place of this one.  It's six to 8 feet high and viewed over the tall front fence of a Victorian-era house.  Cannon Dill is one of my favorite street artists.

T is for tattoo

As you all know, the Millennials are heavy into tattoos.  Compared to what I generally see around town, this tattoo is down right modest in size and complexity.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: storefront design

Walking around Uptown, I spotted this rolling door mural.  Sort of mandala-ish looking with lots of eyes and faces staring  back at you.  As other CDP photogs have shown us, roll up doors are great canvases.

Monday Mural: blue bird

This lovely bird is on an Uptown wall of a restaurant terrace.  Since the restaurant was closed, I couldn't get an unobstructed shot.  I'm guessing it's by Doty but can't be sure.  If I'm wrong, someone will set me straight.

Monday Mural: bird in a cloud

This wonderful avian portrait is found in the Uptown area just off Telegraph Avenue.  If it were a real bird I'd worry about the paint job on the Ford.

remember them

There are four massive bronze sculptures by Mario Chiodo in this Uptown park that highlight moral and social leaders of the world.  It's really hard to take a picture of them to capture size, color, and detail.  These are the best of a bad lot.  Interestingly, there are images 360 degrees around each piece.

coming attractions

This wall of advertising announces a new business coming to Broadway.  It's going to be a square block of shopping, living, social gathering, and art spaces all in one complex to be called Hive.  Sounds like the perfect name.

Monday Mural: solidarity with Palestine

The official name of this mural is Oakland Palestine Solidarity Mural.   Painted by 13 artists, it was finished and dedicated at the end of August.  As you can see, it is quite massive so I've added a couple of shots showing greater detail.

I happened to run across this mural as it was being completed.  To my surprise no one was using aerosol cans, but instead were using brushes.  The styles vary from panel to panel with each image being quite detailed.
