Monday Mural: Aztec circle

Another mural with Aztec roots crossed my path recently.  This is on a downtown parking lot wall.  Sadly, I didn't see a signature.  I look at this and think about the circle of life.  What do you read into it?

Monday Mural: visit Oakland

The downtown Marriott now has a large mural by Illuminaries advertising many of Oakland's sights.  If you look carefully you'll see the Oakland oak tree logo, iconic buildings, a giraffe from the zoo, a BART train, logos of our pro sports teams, and a reference to Lake Merritt, the Black Panthers, and the Dragon School muralists.  The Marriott also houses the training facility for the Golden State Warriors, who will now battle it out with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA championship.  This is the third year in a row these two teams have faced each other for the top title.  Go Warriors!!

Monday Mural: Warriors mural

A new mural which faces the 880 freeway alludes to the electric performance of Steph Curry and his Warrior teammates.  Fittingly, Illuminaries has painted this one on a wall of an indooor basketball court.  Not surprisingly, Under Armor, a major client in Steph's endorsement empire, helped pay for the mural.  As of this week the Warriors have again won the Western division and the first seed position in the Conference playoffs.  Third year in a row.  Now starts the long march to the championship finals.  All of us in Dub Nation are rooting for the another NBA championship.  Waarrriors!!

Monday Mural: cuckoo bird

Max Kauffman got the nod to create murals on the downtown PG&E (gas and electricity) substation.  He clearly has a wild imagination and to my eye likes to blend species in his compositions.  Even his houses look a little anthropomorphic. Bright and entertaining if not a little confusing.  Created in 2014-15.

Monday Mural: lilies on the wall

A Jet Martinez mural was recently completed in downtown Oakland at the rear of the iconic I. Magnin Building.   I. Magnin was a chic fashion store on Broadway and 20th housed in a fantastic green terracotta tiled Deco building.  It now contains offices and still shines among the other Deco buildings that grace downtown.  This mural was arranged through Athen B Gallery and made possible through the building owners HP Investors and Lake Merritt/Uptown Association. Did anyone else think of Diego Rivera when they first looked at this?

Monday Mural: floating among the stars

Many murals can be found downtown on parking lot walls.  This one is by Girl Mobb and features it's pink suited...what?  Astronaut?  Lucha libre fighter?  Pink Avenger?  I have no idea who he is, but I've seen him around town.  Here's an earlier post with the Masked One.

Monday Mural: Malcolm X

Dragon School creates more than dragon images.  This portrait of Malcolm X is particularly impressive even though constrained by the black and gold this street mural group typically uses.

Monday Mural: fly like an eagle

Another dramatic mural on the edge of Chinatown.  And more trash bins obscuring the signature.  Not that I could read it anyway.  Again, the angle and composition create strong movement.

Monday Mural: Doty bird

This bird by Doty adorns a corrugated roll-up window at The Layover, a bar/performance space/gallery.  The owner was about to roll up the window, but let me sneak in a shot before he did.  Doty has many styles but his animals are my favorite.  They always look angry and a little dangerous.

I'm assuming this is a shop for hair extensions.  But I was amused nonetheless.

Monday Mural: steel and fire

Here's a new contribution to the mural scene by Bip, an anonymous street artist.  He's from the New Haven area but has done wall art around the world.  I think you could also call this mural Nostalgia or maybe Soundtracks of Life.  I wonder how many of us continue to prefer the music from our salad days?  Here's what this mural replaced.  P.S.  The confectionery tower in the background is the cupola of our city hall.

charming building

Oakland is full of lovely old apartment buildings like this one.  Because housing has gotten so expensive, there is now a building boom going on here in town.  I doubt many of us could afford what the new apartments and condos will cost.  So the new construction will not offer much relief from exorbitant rents.  The long term outcomes of this cycle will not be pretty.

Monday Mural: what?!

I found this mural on the side of an art gallery on the edge of Chinatown.  I couldn't find a signature, but I'd lay down money that at least the wolf is by Cannon Dill.  The meaning is ambiguous especially with all those extra hands and eyes.  Had to laugh at the cassette tapes on the house.  Of course, one of the tapes is all messed up.  An example of technology that deserved to become obsolete.

Monday Mural: scientist union

This colorful mural is on the front of the building that houses Local 20 of the Engineers and Scientists of California.  It's found downtown and brightens the block it's on.

Monday Mural: the short arc between life and death

Found this massive mural while walking around downtown.  Zio Ziegler has been previously featured here.  He is an incredibly prolific artist with, what seems to me, a feverish mind.  I could not find an official name for the mural.  What would you call it?

The content of this mural is so complex, it's hard to take it in.  And the sheer scale of his murals is quite impressive.  This one is on a wall of the Howden building, previously shown here.  I think the pattern behind the figures is a nod to the building's original tile business.

Monday Mural: California poppy

Our state flower, the California Poppy, is proudly displayed on a downtown building.  It's painted by Pancho Peskador who frequently paints with the Community Rejuvenation Project, which is responsible for many of the murals in Oakland.  I appreciate the mural's strong graphic qualities with its bold lines and colors.  This mural captures the silky, glowing texture of our poppy.

Monday Mural: Happy Lunar New Year

Yeh, I know it's the year of the Monkey.  But I couldn't find one.  Besides, dragons are always found at the Lunar New Year parade.  Right?  Anyway, thought this window decoration was pretty fierce and fun to look at.  Happy Year of the Monkey 猴年吉祥  Hóunián jíxiáng.

Monday Mural: Fields of Dreams

It took me a while to grok this image and then it came to me.  It's an aerial view of the eastern estuary! The circle in the upper right corner is the A's ballpark minus the Oracle arena next door.  The upper left represents the island city of Alameda.  The peninsula in the lower portion is the airport.  All the bright yellow lines represent the freeway, bridges, and main streets in the area.  The blue water is the estuary which runs in from the Bay.  The mural, done this year by Alan Leon, is formally named Fields of Dreams: the fabric of the city.  His work graces the freeway support piers in the Temescal District and was featured here.
