Monday Mural: Satchmo

Many of our schools have murals, typically painted by students.  This one adorns a wall of McClymonds High School in West Oakland.

If you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme's for you.  You decide what constitutes a mural.  Once you start looking, you find them all around.  Follow the Linky steps below.  Be sure to link back to this meme and visit your fellow posters.  Looking forward to the mural finds posted this week.

Monday Mural: Lakeview School mural

This mural covers the concrete covered slope at the base of Lakeview Elementary School.  This vintage school building is situated across from the Grand Lake Theater, previously featured here.  The mural includes many of Oakland's iconic buildings, scenes, and businesses around Lake Merritt.  Sadly the school is among five now slated for closure in June due to the severe decline in student enrollment in the Oakland Schools.

If you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme's for you.  Just follow the Linky steps below.  You get to decide what constitutes a mural.  Be sure to link back to this blog and visit your fellow posters.  Looking forward to the mural finds posted this week.

ABC Wednesday: O is for Oakland Technical High School

Tech is located one block east of last week's post on Broadway.  It was one of six comprehensive high schools in Oakland.  In the past 10 years the Oakland school system moved big time into the charter school and small schools movements.  As a result, Tech, which was established in the late 19th century, is now one of only three comprehensive high schools left in Oakland. The others have been broken into smaller units within their campuses.  Has this improved high school educational outcomes?  The jury remains out.  This graceful building dates to 1914 and has been refurbished twice in the last 30 years.  For more O photos, visit ABC Wednesday.

ABC Wednesday: F is for the Fox Theater

The Fox Theater is a pastiche of styles that mostly look Moorish to my eye.  It was built in 1928, fell into decline in the 60s, and was restored and resurrected in 2009.  It also houses Jerry Brown's charter school, the School for Performing Arts.  Many popular acts now perform here and the Fox is part of the revival of the Uptown area.  For other "F" photos, visit ABC Wednedsay.
