Sunday Bridge Series: Oakland Bay Bridge
Here's a shot of the Bay Bridge looking east toward Oakland. I took it today from Yerba Buena Island where the eastern and western sections are anchored. This side is slated for demolition once the new eastern span is finally completed. You can see part of the new span just beyond the original. It's only taken 20 years and zillions of dollars more than initially anticipated (since the 1989 earthquake damage) to get this far. The actual construction process has been interesting to follow and the new bridge will ultimately have some engineering and design innovations. For every detail you could possibly want to know about the new construction, click here. For more bridges from around the world visit «Louis'» Sunday Bridge Series. Have a happy 4th.

ReplyDelete[I meant to say:] Nice perspective of these two bridges - old and new!
ReplyDeleteGreat view of this bridge.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from India!
I love how it disappears into the other shore! Even unfinished, the new bridge looks impressive. But I'm sure some people will miss the old bridge too.
ReplyDeleteOops. Happy 4th of July! :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Carolyn! You got a view of the bridge «Louis» has never gotten. Photoblogista covered the suspension section of the bridge. Between the two of you, you showed the entire bridge = most people don't realize the Bay Bridge is actually two bridges.
ReplyDeleteIt must be a long awaited bridge being built right now! But I like how the old bridge is constructed, too :-)
ReplyDeleteI've driven across this bridge a couple of times. What I remember is the awful traffic. Your image makes it look so calm.
ReplyDeleteTwo in one! Great entry!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th of July!
Hi!
ReplyDeleteToday I share with you "The Sunday Bridge" at Louis Blog.
Your picture is actually nice.
Best regards from Argentina

This is a great view of the two bridges! Fabulous! Last fall we went boating around the bridge construction zone and watched them lift some of the pieces into place. Quite amazing. The new bridge will give the bay a completely new look - although it's costing quite a bit, isn't it. Thanks for visiting my view! Happy 4th of July and stay cool.
ReplyDeleteThis view is really grand.
ReplyDeleteI can feel the scale...
I really watched it ten years ago.
Yes. The bridge was solemn.
Thank you.

The Oakland Bay Bridge never looked so good! I always wanted to take the off ramp at Yerba Buena but was always in a hurry to get to someplace else. I didn't know much about the new bridge. Great stuff. Happy 4th to you too!
ReplyDeleteTerrific bridge shot.
ReplyDeleteSydney - City and Suburbs
Two bridges, old and new...
ReplyDeleteI like it.
That's a beautiful view of the Oakland Bay Bridge. I enjoyed seeing it close-up. We missed it when we visited California.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive bridge
ReplyDeleteCuriosity compelled me further and found it's original name was the James "Sunny Jim" Rolph Bridge after a Depression era SF mayor. Interesting! Great view. Great photo.
ReplyDeleteHi ,the Aspromonte National Park is located in south Italy in the Calabria region, the reservoir is very deep
ReplyDeleteHmmm...it's a nice bridge. I like the looks of the old one. Will people there be happy when it's finished?
ReplyDeleteWonderful bridge and I think I see a nice place to beachlifte too.
ReplyDeleteWish you a great evening!
