G is for God's Gym

This Uptown building painted black cannot help but capture your attention as you go by.  It's an odd visual combination of body building and Afrocentric images with religious symbolism.  But when you read the story behind this business, it all makes sense.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: salt and peppa'

This Uptown mural can be found at 21st and Telegraph.  It is done by Lisa Hoffman, who was commissioned by the neighborhood association to create some street art.  She calls this style Public PopDot.

Creative Growth Center

The Creative Growth Art Center serves adult artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities, providing a professional studio environment for artistic development, gallery exhibition and representation and a social atmosphere among peers.  It's one of the galleries that is open during Art Murmur on the first Friday of each month.  Their large plate glass windows are perfect for late afternoon reflections.  Linked to Weekend Reflections.

lighthouse ship

.
This is the lightship Relief.  Floating lightships were anchored in areas that were too deep, expensive, or impractical to build a lighthouse.  Lightships were used in the U.S. from 1820 to 1983 and one served the San Francisco Bay from 1898 to 1971.  The Lighthouse Society is dedicated to preserving lighthouses and the country's remaining lightships.

F is for face painting

This post could just as easily be called A is for ambivalence.  The little guy wanted to have a balloon painted on his face, but didn't seem to like the sensation.  In the end, he stuck it out.  Spotted at Pedalfest, an annual event promoting bicycling for fun and transportation.  Linking to ABC Wednesday.

Monday Mural: pride and pedigree

In contrast to the more typical edgy street art you see in Uptown, I give you a sweet, uncomplicated mural.  Pride and Pedigree is a doggy day care and behavior training service.  The mural was painted by Amy Jo Karn in 2010.  It still looks fresh and is actually a visual relief from all the red and brown brick buildings in the neighborhood.

Woodmen of the World

Woodmen of the World was a fraternal organization begun in Nebraska in 1890.  It sought to give financial help to its members primarily through insurance plans.
One of the perks of membership was a free grave marker in the form of a tree stump.  Several can be found in both Mountain View and St. Mary's cemeteries.

They typically include branch knots, ferns, a hatchet, and a dove of peace.
The practice was discontinued sometime in the 1920s due to the expense involved.  The company continues to exist today as an insurance company in Omaha.

Monday Mural: sympathetic eyes

Another section of the huge collaborative mural from David Polka  and Ernest Doty I showed you July 23.  This is Doty's work.  Can't tell you what it means, but there's no denying this is a compelling image.

Monday Mural: apartment upgrade

Someone was inspired to repaint the facade of this Victorian era apartment building.  The Pow! Wow! feel reminds me of Peter Max. This building now sparkles on a corner of a sketchy neighborhood on San Pablo Avenue in West Oakland.  I spoke to some of the neighbors who seem happy with the results and are proud to know the artist.

Skywatch Friday: more blue skies

A 1960s-70s vintage motel on West MacArthur Blvd when MacArthur was the primary thoroughfare in Oakland pre-urban renewal. The hotel is being well maintained even as it has transitioned to a residential motel.  Love the sign, love the font on the wall, love those decorative oval thingies on the corner of the building.  Also love the blue skies we're enjoying and the comfortable Oakland temperatures.   If you go east through the Caldecott Tunnel, you'll find temps in the 90s.  And how is it in your area?  Linking to Skywatch Friday.

Theme Day: Numbers

The first of every month has a theme that the City Daily Photo  community can participate in.  This month's is "numbers."  Spotted this bus sign on Joaquin Miller Rd in the Oakland Hills. They seem to be running out of space because of changes and additions.  I have no idea where any of these buses go.  For other participants in this month's Theme Day go the the temporary CDPB Theme Day website hosted by Sydney Eye.
