how do we help the homeless?

Like every city, Oakland has its share of homeless people.  It's hard to know what to do to address this problem especially since mental illness, addiction, PTSD, and the current economy are all factors in this sad situation.  Some we know by name, others have a story hidden from us.  What does your community do to about homelessness?  Linked to ABC Wednesday

  1. There are shelters for extreme weather and food pantries. Not sure how we get to the root of the problem.

  3. There is a huge shelter on the edge of downtown St. Paul with a welcoming lawn around it; there are always people milling around the Dorothy Day center. School groups often do community service there, too. Many churches provide shelter on both short term and long term basis in both Twin Cities. Lots of people volunteer to make meals and some groups have opened up stores for free clothing. I'll have to stay more alert to see how our two cities provide basic health care and basic hygiene help. Yet, there are people sleeping under bridges and other places. I just posted a description of how I and a friend help just a tiny bit by picking up bread and pastries every Monday from a local bakery/restaurant to take to a church where supper is provided to homeless kids and young adults by other volunteers. Homelessness is a massive problem in a country that is as rich in resources as ours. Better mental health assessment and care is one of the significant problems.

  5. There are no easy answers. Our community has shelters and many churches have feeding programs. I am involved with the Placer Food Bank.
I think we just have to help where we can. The poor and homeless will always be visible.
I totally agree with Kate's comment.

  6. You said it yourself: difficult to solve this problem. Many of the homeless peopleare mentally ill, and they cannot deal with their financial situation. They lose their home, their job, everything. It is very sad. Their health problems are often even greater.Good of you to draw the attention to this problem.
