This is the High Street Bridge, one of three bridges connecting Oakland to the island community of Alameda. (There's also the Posey Tube that goes under the Estuary to Alameda). This drawbridge has a similar design to the
Park Street Bridge, although it was built four years later (1939). See other bridge photos, hosted weekly by
San Francisco Bay DP.

ReplyDeleteWe have a bridge here in Saint Paul (I currently have two blogs) that is located high above the Mississippi at an angle from bank to bank, called the High Bridge (very original!) Interesting structure. The photo of your High Street Bridge is excellent!
Super, Carolyn! «Louis» likes the way you captured the gear teeth for raising the bridge.

ReplyDeleteChuck at One A Day - Mostly Seattle has a bridge similar to the High Street Bridge, but for trains, not cars. «Louis» posted the link to your bridge at his blog.
ReplyDeleteEngineering rocks! And it makes great art, or you make it into great art.
ReplyDeleteI love how you've cropped this photo, very nicely designed.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see bridges of this scale, I'm reminded of the fact that someone had to crawl way up there to build it! Thank goodness is was someone other than me! LOL
