Theme day: shadow and highlight

This month's theme is shadow and light.  Here is a late afternoon scene on the estuary near Jack London Square.  Linked to City Daily Photo where you will find world wide submissions on this theme.

Monday Mural: Roots Run Deep

This mural by David 'MEGGS' Hooke went up in June near Jack London Square.  Here's a link to a short video about its creation.  It's a huge mural, hence the two photos.  (I have no idea how to stitch photos together).  It seems to me that the two parts don't really hang together as a narrative but the fierce emotion of the piece cannot be denied.  Makes me wonder if he also illustrates graphic novels.

Welcome to Monday Mural: if you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme's for you.  Just follow the Linky steps below.  You decide what constitutes a mural.  Once you start looking, you find them everywhere.  Be sure to link back to this blog and visit your fellow posters. Looking forward your mural finds posted this week.  Google+ users, please configure your post so we all can leave a comment.

cranes aloft

Sometimes it surprises me how close you can get to those container cranes.  Tell me these don't look like something out of Star Wars.  Taken just north of Jack London Square.

another summer fair

This summer has been warmer than most.  Seems to be a trend around the country.  This season of outdoor events has been extra fun due to the absence of chilly weather at the end of the day.  This is a crafts market that occurred this month at Jack London Square.

the sky is a steady blue

The skies have pretty much been like you see behind the parasol.  The past several days have been sunny and warm with a bit of wind in the afternoon.  Perfect for outdoor fairs like this one at Jack London Square.  Linked to Skywatch Friday.

Hungry?

Spotted this week at the farmer's market at Jack London Square.  Made me laugh.  Belatedly linked to ABC Wednesday.

Skywatch Friday: another clear day

Another clear day without rain.  Sometimes there are clouds in the morning but they tend to dissipate by noon.  December's rain seemed to say the drought is over; January seems to say "not yet."  Linked to Skywatch Friday.

canine companion

It was a nice day and I think they were taking each other for a walk.  Linking to ABC Wednesday.

vertical bicycles

For some reason, bicycles are mounted on several poles around Jack London Square.  Don't know why.  Biking culture is big in Oakland and every year bike lanes are added to our roadways.  JLS also hosts the annual Pedalfest.  So, I'm assuming a connection.

outdoor living even in winter

There's a new place down at Jack London Square called plank (yeah, a lower case "p").  It replaces a Barnes & Noble bookstore that closed without warning.  Besides food, it offers billiards, bocce ball, bowling, a children's play area, and of course, an outdoor sports bar.  What can I say, it's California.

walking at Jack London Square

After a rainy December, we're in a period of cold, clear weather.  (Assuming you think 59 degrees is cold).  Even though we're freezing, it doesn't stop us from walking out in the sunshine.

flags in the breeze

The formal entrance to Jack London Square has a nice display of flags.  The black one is the logo for the Oakland Raiders.  Linked to Skywatch Friday.

Indian summer

We're enjoying an Indian summer with sunny skies and very little fog.  While walking Jack London Square it seemed like everyone and his cousin was there.  Then I found the food fair.  No wonder so many people were out and about.  Duh.

Theme Day: street lamps

I'm a little late to the party.  The first of each month, City Daily Photo sponsors a theme, this month's being street lamps.  These examples are at Jack London Square, which is predominately a pedestrian walk way along the estuary.

Sea Wolf

Parked at Jack London Square, the city's rescue ship is ready for any emergency on the estuary.  You don't hear about it being used much, but it's clear they keep everything spiffed up and ship shape in case they are called to duty.

A is for American Bag Company

Many of the warehouse district buildings have recently been converted to office spaces and condos.  The American Bag Company, built in 1917 and now providing office spaces, is listed on the the National Register of Historic Places.  This building is only two blocks from the waterfront, Jack London Square, and lots of excellent restaurants.  The conversion process started years ago when now Gov. Jerry Brown bought a loft in this neighborhood where he lived and ran his campaigns for the presidency.  Later, when he was mayor of Oakland, he spearheaded the building of thousands of condo units in the downtown area.  This initiative has gone a long ways to revitalize this part of Oakland.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.
