celebrating the 4th

Due to difficult economic times, most cities in the East Bay, including Oakland, did not celebrate Independence Day with fireworks.  But a sunny afternoon in Lakeside Park, with the Municipal Band playing their first concert of the season, was a charming and relaxing way to honor the day.

  1. An outdoor concert is a splendid way to celebrate!

  2. That is the first mention I've seen about cut-backs affecting fireworks displays. No doubt it was quite widespread this year.

  3. Wow - that looks like a great way to spend the day. SF didn't cut back this year - rather spectacular event, and we were at a house where we could see Marin counties as well - there's looked pretty terrific too. Interesting that Oakland still cut back this year - we have over the last few, but not this year. Shows the disconnect of recovery around here.

  4. I am a big fan of outdoor concerts, though I am also saddened to read that Oakland had to omit the fireworks. But, I suppose, it does make sense.
