abandoned shoes

Found these near the lake.  There's got to be a story behind this vignette.  Any ideas?

    They do look rather grubby. Maybe someone who bought new shoes and just left the old ones behind?

    William thinks they are grubby? No no no no. Boots are made for working. This workman just took them off for a while while he took a break.
