Theme Day: Red

At the end of Shoreline Park is a short pier jutting out into the bay. It seems to have been designed specifically for fishing.  This photo was taken from that spot yesterday.  This is the Oakland Bay Bridge, built in less that 4 years and inaugurated in 1936.  It is a double deck bridge with SF bound traffic on the top level.  The better known Golden Gate Bridge was completed seven months later.  Both are engineering marvels.  A fascinating account of the construction of both bridges can be found in High Steel published in 1979.  For more theme day photos Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

  1. It's a great snapshot of the bridge against the skyline with the spot of red on the building. A subtle approach. Re. my post: the jacket is not a Chimayo weave but a Pendleton. I love all those native jackets, tho, and apparently you do, too! Happy theme day to you!

  2. Good choice for the theme day, Carolyn - the red really stands out against the somewhat murky bay and the grey-cast sky.

HIGH STEEL is a very good account of the building of our iconic bridges.

Have you ever seen the design Frank Lloyd Wright did for a proposed bridge between the Alameda side of Oakland to SF? It would have been a beautiful thing had it been built.

  4. A bridge like this is such a marvel. Great splash of theme day red and a wonderfully clear view of the city.

  6. I remember driving across that bridge in 1992 and wondering where the vehicles going the other direction were. Apparently I wasn't very clever back then. Lovely photo!

  7. What a great find. Great use of red in contrast to grays, browns, and related colors. Really nice pic.
