Chapel of Memories

Inspired by last week's post by Gene of Our Oakland, I decided to visit The Chapel of Memories for the first time.  Not exactly difficult, since I live in the neighborhood.  This facility is now owned by the Chapel of the Chimes which is a couple of blocks away.  The columbarium appears to be from the same period and is of a similar style.  This is the first urn you see when you enter these doors:
The various rooms have names like Prayer, Remembrance, Psalm, and Rest and are lined in glass fronted niches.
The stained glass ceilings are a lovely touch and allow in natural light.  My favorite room had Della Robbia type faience rondelles.
Like the Chapel of Chimes, the Chapel of Memories has multiple levels and usually a place to sit and think a while.

  4. It looks beautiful, but having the urns on view would take a bit of getting used to for me. I almost expect to see a library ladder on wheels off in a corner.

  5. That's a strange way to decorate the outside of a building, if you ask me.

  7. This is fantastic! What a great entry on the meme.

Regarding your question as to the name of the bridge in Lisbon: Portuguese lived under Salazar's dictatorship for 48 years until 1974, when a revolution took place on April 25.

  13. I've never seen anything like this. Columbaria are usually such gray and solemn places. This one is all honey tones and full of warmth.

  16. The post is terrific, but then again, so are the comments! It is interesting how differently people react to the same images.

This would have to be the most beautiful columbarium I have seen to date. I think that the light streaming in through the stained glass ceilings is the key to this. As I mentioned last week, they can seem to be stuffy. This could just be the mind playing tricks, or it could be to do with the lack of air flow. In the one I featured at Botany, there were seats, but they were wooden pews. More a nod to religion that plain sitting and contemplating.

I liked the comment about the imagined library ladder in a corner. this had struck me too. The niches are so ordered and so similar, it is very library like in appearance.

So glad that participating in our meme, has caused you to go and visit such an enchanting place in your own neighbourhood. Excellent ...
