This peace wall is in Jack London Square. It is composed of tiles created by Oakland school children under the guidance of local artists. As best I can determine, it was done in 1998. There are actually two walls of tiles, which line steps that move down toward the waters of the estuary. The steps used to lead up to a Barnes & Noble, which suddenly closed up shop two years ago. No new tenant has yet come forward.

This tile mural is totally marvelous! The message - peace - is always welcome. But the children were well art-directed... the tiles display creativity and talent and they all tie together well. Would be wonderful to see this in person. Thanks for leaving the image large enough to be enjoyed enlarged.

ReplyDeleteA great way to integrate locally produced art into the community. I love that it is made by kids and who knows... maybe some of them were inspired to go into the art world from their work with the professional artists of their day. Really nice find here!

ReplyDeleteDelightful. Love the colors, composition and the theme. It reminds me of my sisters kitchen. Each summer each of her children ( since they could scribble) have made a tile to celebrate something in there life. The tiles are signed and dated. She has/had a all while tiled kitchen. She breaks out the white tiles and replaces them with the new colored ones her three kids make each year. She is starting to have a very colorful and spotty kitchen.

ReplyDeleteYou asked about the difference between a college and a university. You could get 10 conflicting answers if you asked 10 people. I think a university is accredited to award graduate degrees but a college is not.
