Monday Mural: elements of power, visions of change

This mural was done in 1999 by students at Laney College.  Despite the words of hope, the surrounding community has not prospered.  A neighbor told me that this apartment building has been vacant for the past several months.  So far, no one is squatting in it.

  1. I guess the intention behind the message is still true - even if the building failed to carry it out. Just as an urban work of art its pretty spectacular.

  2. A sad, even bitter, irony. I wonder if some local social scientist could measure the effect - if any - these murals have on the local people.

  3. This is the kind of bright and colorful mural I associate with Oakland. Sorry the community has been suffering. It is no solace to observe that inner city neighborhoods all around the country are under stress.

  4. As long as the mural is there, there is hope!

  5. What a pity the vision has not been realized. The mural is so strong, with those capable hands holding humanity...
