Skywatch Friday: Oakland hills

After the 1991 Firestorm that destroyed 3000 homes in the Oakland-Berkeley hills, most people elected to rebuild.  Many built McMansions on lots that had previously held more modest size homes.  These neighborhoods were typically obscured by stands of tall trees that are only now returning to maturity.  A drive through this area was accompanied by clear blue skies perfect for Skywatch Friday.

  1. What a fabulous photo. I love all the brightly coloured homes set against a clear blue sky.

  2. Thanks for the photo that jogged my memory of the massive fire that went through the area. Nice to see they were able to rebuild. It's strange how people continue to live in disaster zones such earth quake and tornado.

  3. Very nice composition. A clear blue sky can often be the start of a great capture. Well done.

  4. Fingers crossed another doesn't return. They often do with those SA winds.

  5. At least the McMansions don't all look drearily the same!

    SKY SONG

    Glowing moon and shining stars,
    Venus, Jupiter and Mars,
    Planets swirling round the sun;
    Darkness falls when day is done.

    In the vast and endless sky
    Eagle, wren and falcon fly;
    Over hill and dale they roam,
    Calling cloud and thunder home.

  6. I only moved to Oakland a few years ago, so learning a bit of history about specific neighborhoods is so important to me. Thank you for the photo and the history lesson!

  7. This is a nice scene. I don't remember the fire, but that was a long time ago and I am on the other coast.

  8. WOW! So much lush greenery and beautiful homes lining the hillside. A lovely composed shot. Bet those homes cost a wad!

  9. I like your photo, and I like that the greenery has returned. Still, I'm not fond of McMansions and I have never understood why anyone would want to build to the edges of their property so close to their neighbor and without much garden.
