The Union Machine Works has been in existence since 1885. They've been in this location since about 1915. Most windows are boarded up and those that are not have been targets for rock throwing. Contrary to appearances, they are still in business. This building is on 4th St. very near Jack London Square and occupies much of the block. For more "U" themed photos, visit

why the rocks? because it's a union shop? if so, that's terrible.

How strange to go out and throw rocks for a pastime.
ReplyDeleteAn all-American institution. What's not to love about that. Great rustic colors on that building too.
ReplyDeleteI love old buildings. if the walls could talk I wonder how many things they tell us, many events have happened since 1915
ReplyDeleteGlad to see some of these old businesses are still functioning. Great shot .
ReplyDeleteA rarity in North America... a business that hasn't been moved to China.
ReplyDeleteI am glad they have enough business to keep in business. Machine works are tough businesses, often boom or bust, with more busts than booms.
ReplyDeletenice historic building, Nice lighting!
ReplyDeleteI wonder why it's a target for rock throwing! I guess that building is nearly a century old so ought to get more respect. :)
ReplyDeleteThe shadows made the building great decoration. Have a great day!
