This photo of Oakland's version of the Occupy Wall Street action was taken 10 days ago. Occupiers camped in the public space in front of city hall and attracted a diverse group of participants. Over time the mood shifted from ebullient to edgy. Before dawn today the police moved in to remove the protesters and their tent city; tonight the confrontation has turned ugly. Regardless of where you stand on the 99% Movement, this
local story arc was entirely predictable. Sigh. For more representations of "O", visit
ABC Wednesday.
Occupy seems to be a common theme this Wednesday. Obviously very much on people's minds.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the whole world is protesting against something or somebody. The Arab world, Europe ... Do they know what they are protesting against?
ReplyDeleteWe thought that the age of Dickens was cruel and very bad, but nothing has changed. Thanks for your visit.
Sorry for the troubles.
ReplyDeleteOCCUPY seems like a good concept, though I'm not sure where it's going.
ROG, ABC Wednesday team
There was something similar to this in Manchester recently and they left a lot of mess behind which the city had to clean up. "One step in front of the other" is a phrase we use frequently too.
ReplyDeleteSo much (justified) anger; so little (constructive) direction.
ReplyDeleteOakland Riot
ReplyDeleteIndeed, I'd expect Oakland to be a hard sell for the OWS movement, but good luck to them. My ABC Wednesday is O is for Oracle.
ReplyDeleteI think many people are on the edge right now and what most OWSers want is fairness in our tax structure and banking/financial systems. Good luck that! Glad you were able to visit them at this camp.
ReplyDeleteI am so sad that last night's confrontation (and yesterday's eviction) turned so ugly. One of the best things about this movement is that it makes people feel hopeful and not alone in such awful times.
ReplyDeleteGood post!
ReplyDeleteSaw it on the news... just hope something positive and constructive can come of all this.
ReplyDeleteAlways thrilled to see bloggers out at their various "Occupy" sites and pictures as well. Disgusted by the police action last night, let's hope something good comes of the entire thing.
ReplyDeleteFinally, a common sight everywhere now. It was about time!
