This mural covers the concrete covered slope at the base of Lakeview Elementary School. This vintage school building is situated across from the Grand Lake Theater, previously featured
here. The mural includes many of Oakland's iconic buildings, scenes, and businesses around Lake Merritt. Sadly the school is among five now slated for closure in June due to the severe decline in student enrollment in the Oakland Schools.

ReplyDeleteWhy have enrolments declined for Oakland schools, Carolyn? An ageing population. Low population growth. Families going private. Was it a 'good' school do you know?

ReplyDeleteWhat vibrant colors! I sincerely hope they repurpose this building when the school closes! WIth our population increasing, it is cause for wonder why the enrollment would be down...unless the area is suffering a general decline in population. Nice mural - it is a feel-good one!

ReplyDeleteInteresting and complex mural. So sad about the school. Many PV schools closed due to aging population in the '80s and are booming now again. I hope the trend changes in Oakland too.
