This Baptist church occupies the former original Greek Orthodox church that was on the site from 1921 to 1960. This graceful structure located on Castro Street on the edge of downtown Oakland now faces the 980 freeway.
WOW! Caroline, «Louis» hadn't found this! Is the Greek Orthodox church below 580 the replacement for this building? Have you been in the one below 580? The interior is beautiful.
The Greek says "in the congregations, bless God". It's a phrase in the liturgy.
A short history and some older pictures of this building (it was moved from its original location!) can be found here, the site of the historical society for the parish of Ascension Cathedral (the website for which is here).

ReplyDeleteA pleasing shot. I think the Greek says, in the order given, "In the church glorify your God." But don't quote me!
