Sage Motel

I've always liked this old sign.  It's on MacArthur Blvd. just on the other side of the freeway from Mills College.  Back in the day, MacArthur was a main thoroughfare through town and there are still lots of old motels along it.  Most seem to be residence motels now.  I imagine some even rent rooms by the hour, if you get my drift.  It's a modern miracle that signs like this have survived and are still in working order.

  1. Beautiful! I'm so glad that it's a night photo.
This is very nostalgic. Did you take this through a window? I'm trying to figure out the strange upside down reflection of the word "MOTEL".

  2. We do not have many of these left in Sydney, not in the inner city which is my haunt. I have collected a few by day, but must get out and collect the night equivalents.

This is very reminiscent of the '40s - '50s for me.

  3. Oh, but the room-by-the-hour fits the sign so beautifully! So nostalgic, so James Ellroy novels... so California!

    Love it.

  4. Nice shot. We got a couple of these places on what used to be old Route 66. I should have a look.

  7. Yay for capturing these classic signs! They are an art form in themselves. I know that stretch of McABlvd, and its not one I would slow down in during the day. . .so kudos to you for taking a night shot! :-)
