when buildings were billboards

Spotted on Broadway near 20th Street.  This building has a minimum of three different advertisements on it. In January Sydney Eye did a cool series on these kinds of ads.  They are like portals to the past.  These will be completely obscured when the trees leaf out.

  2. Reminds me to get a few similar shots in York. "Ground gripper shoes" wouldn't work as a slogan today, at least not in the UK.

  4. «Louis» has noticed these, but has never been able to completely read the top one. Good catch, Carolyn!

  5. I like these kind of signs. There are a bunch of them on old city-center buildings here. Let us know if you find more.

  6. I love your blog. You are on my blogroll. I live in San Jose, and occasionally have to drive through Oakland.

  7. Very nice. It's great to see these where they're still around. They look so classy and evocative now, though perhaps at the time they seemed just as crass and commercial as most modern day advertising.

  9. Yes, they were. We still have a few left in Astoria, but less complete. I hadn't pinpointed this as a concept, but it's so true.
