ABC Wednesday: S is for sphinx

More than one tomb in Mt. View cemetery has sphinxes guarding it.  Much to my surprise, Wikipedia tells me the sphinx is a symbol for Christ and the divine light.  Didn't know that; did you?  The sculpture in the cemetery is always a delight to see.  For more takes on "S", please visit ABC Wednesday.

    Lots of Egyptian imagery in Mt. View Cemetery. I'd never heard the sphinx ~ Christ and the divine light connection before, though

    Yes in fact Sphinx was always looked upon as a guardian. Since Christianity also takes its concept from the Egyptian beliefs I am not surprised of this role of Sphinx as well

    It is hard for me to understand the ancient sphinx meaning ANYTHING in Christian symbolism. But, what do I know?

    No, I had associated the Sphinx with Egyptian deities and had no idea Christianity has adopted it. Not sure how I feel about this image, but the face is beautiful.
