unique living

The old warehouse district next to Jack London Square has been going through gentrification with old factories converting to loft/condos.  New condo buildings also fill the area.  The trend started with Jerry Brown, our former governor, former mayor, and now governor-elect.  Years before he ran for mayor, he converted a warehouse near here into a work-live loft and office for his Presidential campaigns.  He deserves credit for changing the face of Oakland's downtown housing.

  2. That is a very plain building, but some how it speaks to me. I am delighted that people are increasingly re-using older buildings creatively instead of razing them.

  5. "Governor Moonbeam" image aside, «Louis» thinks Jerry Brown did a good job as Mayor of Oakland. Brown had the vision Oakland needed a did much to turn the city around. It is sad that Dellums let much of what Brown accomplished come unraveled...

«Louis» remembers attending a Rotary Club meeting in Oakland where Brown spoke when he was Mayor. He told the group that he was running the city like he was a Republican. It was a very revealing comment...

  8. Yes, I like to see these lofts on the inside of these buildings too -too bad they don't have them here in the Laguna area - I would like a loft for my painting!

  11. Jerry Brown didn't start the trend, though. I think his building was new construction. Others had converted some of these buildings in the Waterfront Warehouse Historic District a good bit earlier.
