U is for urban farm

While driving down Mandela Parkway I spied this cool chicken coop with quite a variety of chickens.  The picture is not as sharp as it could be because it was dusk and I had to shoot over a cyclone fence.  Urban farms are growing in Oakland and right now chickens are allowed but not roosters.  Funny, I could swear I've heard them crow in several spots around town.  Must be my imagination.  There's lots of debate about what other animals should be allowed and what should be guidelines for butchering.  Linked to ABC Wednesday.

  1. There seems to be more of these urban farms popping up all the time.

  2. Seems like a good idea what with rising prices in grocery stores these days.

  3. This is Oakland? I would hate to buy a place, have my neighbor decide to have chickens, and there is nothing I can do to prevent it. They are talking about the same thing in Hartford. I think it is fuzzy thinking.

  5. It is mixed feelings about our neighbour with chicken, ducks; really smells bad ! The space between bouses are just too small, but I like vegetable, fruit, flora plants in urban settings !

  8. This just made me smile so hard, my cheeks hurt. Has to be the cutest chicken coop I've ever seen. Lots of chickens and goats in Metro Manila, but they don't have houses as cute as this one.

  9. Lovely little 'shabby chic' chicken home here. I'm pretty certain someone around our area has a rooster also, must admit the crowing doesn't bother me so much.

  11. Urban farms...in Oakland? Wow interesting! Nature seems a great antidote to what ails the human condition so I see this a big positive

  15. They aren't allowed here in Toronto but there is an underground movement of chickens and as long as the neighbours don't complain you can get away with a few. I love the idea!

  17. The roosters around our neighborhood sometimes drive me crazy... but most of the time I sleep right through their early morning cockadoodledoos. I lament the increasing gap between urban and rural, so I welcome this. Cute coop too!
