SOOC: parklet on Piedmont Avenue

A couple of weeks ago Oakland participated in International Park(ing) Day.  The movement aims to make cities more liveable by adding more outdoor seating on streets.  Several businesses set up "parklets" in parking spaces in front of their stores.  This spot was in front of Shimizu, a Japanese restaurant on Piedmont Avenue.  The latest news is that the city has decided to permit 8(!!) longer term parklets around town as an experiment.  This shot is unedited and submitted to SOOC Sunday.

  6. Looks nice! We have quite a few outdoor cafés in my town but I like the idea of more places to just "park yourself" :)

  8. What a cool idea! It would be good if this initiative caught on in cities where there is not a dire shortage of parking. I can see it working in Hartford, but it would never work in Boston, for example.

  12. I think this is great. I was in Italy this past summer and people there are so happy to just sit and enjoy the day. We need more places where it's okay to just 'be'.
