This is the lightship Relief. Floating lightships were anchored in areas that were too deep, expensive, or impractical to build a lighthouse. Lightships were used in the U.S. from 1820 to 1983 and one served the San Francisco Bay from 1898 to 1971. The Lighthouse Society is dedicated to preserving lighthouses and the country's remaining lightships.

Thanks for these nice photos.
ReplyDeleteI have only ever seen one lightship, in Sydney, Australia. It is a fascinating thing to think about.
Love the red! I've never heard of a light-ship, but I think it's pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteImpressive and very red!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love that top photo. The angle makes the photograph very striking. Growing up close to Lake Michigan and now just a short drive to Duluth and Lake Superior, I adore lighthouses! Have a coffee table book of them that I occasionally leaf through in order to get my lake water and lighthouse "fix."
ReplyDeleteI`v never seen it before.. impressive. And a very great red color. Nice photos.
ReplyDeleteExcellent composition on top! Love it.
