Tooling around West Oakland recently, I found this mural done by the TDK crew this year. It commemorates the 1989 earthquake which involved the flattening of a double deck freeway that ran through this part of Oakland. Many people who lived in this poor neighborhood rushed to the collapsed freeway, and climbed the unstable structure to rescue people trapped in their cars. Their heroism remains a strong memory to this day.

It is good to know that their contribution to helping in crisis hasn't been forgotten
ReplyDeleteI remember the statements of the awful situations of people stuck in their crushed cars after that earthquake. Terrible!!! Great tribute to people who tried to help them.
ReplyDeleteA powerful mural and I remember the earthquake well, I can't believe it was so long ago...
ReplyDeleteIt was a terrible event. The mural is a good reminder.
ReplyDeleteNice memory and good that it is a reminder of what can happen.
ReplyDeleteMe gusta, algo diferente a lo que habitualmente se suele pintar.

Great to have their heroism commemorated in this highly visible way. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteThe left side of the mural is awe-inspiring. It is important to remember the earthquake and the neighborhood's heroism. But the lettering on the right is illegible, at least to me.
